Itching to try out VLC Media Player for Android? It’s now available for download although it’s still in beta so expect a little bump here and there, but the good thing is that it’s now available.
The beta version will run on the following chipsets: ARMv6/ARM11, ARMv7a/Cortex-A8/NEON and ARMv7a/Cortex-A9, so better check out what your phone’s chipset is before installing it.

360 Launcher homescreen360 Launcher is a nice new launcher which imitates the MIUI ROM. This launcher was first developed in Chinese and later got translated into English with the help of a XDA member.
I personally tested this launcher and i must say it is a must have launcher for any Androidian. It is fast and full of eye candy themes and wallpapers which are downloadable completely for free from the Official site . I really liked the Weather Widget but we can’t change its location setting from Beijing. Although it looks kinda nice just sitting there on my homescreen.


You also get a Power widget bundled with the launcher. The Flashlight included in the widget works out of the box i.e. you don’t need an app to run it.

‘Transparent Screen’ Android App Lets You Text And Walk Without Fear

I used to scowl when I saw peoplewalking  down the street with eyes locked on their phones, but necessity has gotten me in the habit of doing it too. Thanks to a new app called Transparent Screen though, now I can do it free from the fear of falling into an open manhole or into a large fountain.
No, that’s not a hastily Photos hopped image you see here, that’s more or less exactly what you’ll see when the app is running. I say “more or less” because while all of the Android UI goes translucent upon launch, you’re afforded with quite a bit of a control over how dramatic the effect is. It’s in your best interest to get familiar with the settings if you plan on using  Transparent Screen for a while too, because you’ll soon have some choices to make.
If you’re a fan of texting while sprinting for example (which I don’t condone, for the record), crank the camera resolution down to keep that forward view going as smoothly possible. Alternately, crank it up you’re more a fan of slow, meandering walks while you tweet about the wonders of nature.
The big issue, as Android Police points out, is that you’d be hard-pressed to find a configuration that works well while bouncing between your favorite apps. Still, that’s a pretty minor concern —Transparent Screen seems like an app best used occasionally, when you absolutely have to fire off a message while on the move. Sure, there’s nothing that says you can’t have it running nonstop, just be prepared to watch your remaining battery life disappear in front of your eyes.

A lot of people rely on the internet for information these days and everybody knows the biggest open encyclopaedia on the internet is Wikipedia. And in today's new age of smartphones, almost every big name has an app. So here we have the official Wikipedia Android app available free of cost on the Android Market. 


The app has a pretty simple layout with a search bar at the top where you can put in your queries. Once you search for something, the information is given as you would see on the web-page of Wikipedia.

Google Acquires a Virtual Assistant ‘Alfred’, But Still a Long Way To Go To Compete Siri

It was announced on Tuesday by Google that it has acquired a company named Clever Sense, which is credited for developing the app called Alfred, and plays the role of a digital personal assistant. However the terms and conditions of the deal has not been disclosed yet.

           When you're on the road, the ability to tether your phone to a laptop or netbook can be invaluable. But due to carrier or software restrictions, this isn't possible on every Android device right out of the box. And some users still experience problems using Android's native tethering abilities with certain carriers, even if the service isn't blocked at the software level.
PdaNet gracefully side-steps many of the issues associated with tethering, offering the ability to share your phone's data connection via USB or Bluetooth. The Bluetooth option can have you up and running in seconds -- simply pair your phone with your laptop, hit "Enable Bluetooth DUN" and follow the instructions. USB tethering requires a little more groundwork, as you'll need to install the PdaNet client on your PC or Mac first, but once you've done that, everything works without a hitch. PdaNet 3.02 is available for free on the Android Market.

                          In android 2.2 it is possible to delete more than one contact at a time. In older versions of android this facility is not there. Because of that we have to select each contact and delete one by one. 
 
Contact remover is a free android application which allows you to delete multiple contacts at a time. With the select option in the software you can select the contacts which you want to delete. With one click you can delete all the selected contacts.

Welcome to Android Apps Alert Volume 71. We actually missed an episode last week, but we’re back to tracking the interesting and noteworthy apps from the Android Market over the past two weeks. Our theme is Ask Me, Dell Me, Max Me because those represent some of the apps featured in this edition.
Android Apps Alert features a couple of apps for crowdsourcing answers from others, an app for shopping with Dell, and a couple of apps for watching or controlling television. Let’s take a look at the new apps. Before we start, here are a few quick hits:
ESPN Bowl Bound 2011 - I raved about the ESPN Bowl Bound 2010 app and said that this is the kind of app that ESPN should have released at the beginning of the football season. The WWLIS must have listened because you can now grab this awesome app to track the NCAA season. The Android 2.1+ app has news, blogs, video highlights and ESPN analysts, Twitter feeds for ESPN writers, rankings, scores, and schedules. [Install Android app]
FEMA for Android – Let’s not get into the many jokes and political ramblings typically associated when discussing FEMA. Instead, let’s focus on the timely usefulness for this app that helps people get prepared for Hurricane season and other disasters. Marriott International – There are more than 3,600 hotels in 70 countries controlled by the Marriott hotel company. This app provides information and reservations for all of them. Users can also manage/cancel reservations and browse photos and maps for the hotel. [Install Android App]

Former web search engine and current Q&A search engine Ask.com has made its way to Android. The new Android app is simple way to ask a question and have them answered by the visitors or community members. When users log-in, a list of the most recent questions are shown, but registered users can also narrow those inquiries down by interest or within their connected circle. Users or answer questions by using the keyboard or speech-to-text. Ask.com also supports viewing of profiles and questions that users have asked or answered. Grab this if you want to hear from other people and not rely strictly on your Google Ninja skills.

Dell Mobile

Dude, you’re…forget it, you know the rest. The Dell Mobile app has arrived for Android users who shop at Dell a lot. The app is a well-designed way to browse the Dell.com website when looking for a new laptop, desktop, personal electronics, or accessories. There’s even a featured section that shows new deals and Shop Assist to help users narrow down their focus on new products. But since you probably aren’t going to keep an app around if you shop Dell.com once a year, you can also use it for support. Mobile has help topics and community forums for troubleshooting. You can move on to contacting tech support or sales reps if that doesn’t work. This app probably only makes sense to have if you love Dell and frequently shop or seek help from the company, so grab it if you have Android 2.0 or higher.

MakeIt3D

Do you have envy that HTC EVO 3D and Optimus Pad users can take 3D photos? Me neither, but you can still play around with 3D effects with this Android app. MakeIt3D creates 3D photos by taking images (from the camera or gallery) and then aligning them in ways to create a stereoscopic effect. The app even has settings to change alignment and colors until the user gets the image just right. The images might not be as clear and effective as ones taken on actual 3D cameras, but this can replicate the novelty on any Android 2.1+ phone. Get the Pro version to remove ads and watermarks.

Localmind

Android 2.2+ required

Foursquare and Google Places are great for discovering places to visit and let your friends know where you are. But those location-based services aren’t always spot-on when in a new city or unfamiliar neighborhood. Localmind acts as a Foursquare-meets-Quora. Users can see check-ins and ask locals about the venue. So when looking for a decent bar, ask others and be told. Does the coffee house 2 blocks north have free Wi-Fi, or should you go to the one 3 blocks south? The app is great way to bring crowdsourcing to LBS, but it requires user participation. As such, Localmind’s usability will vary depending on the cities and areas users visit.

MAX GO

Android 2.1-2.3.3, US Only

Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, and now Max Go — somebody really doesn’t want me to do anything but watch television programs and movies on my Android phone. Cinemax released Max Go to enable watching its programming on Android phones, similar to the app released by HBO weeks ago. And like that app, you must have a Cinemax subscription through your cable/satellite provider. Log-in and you’ll get movies, Max After Dark, Max Uncut, and a roster of video options updated each week. In addition to streaming content, Max Go also manages the stuff you want to see on bigger screens by creating a Watchlist of programs to queue. A 3G connection or better is required to stream video.

Tivo Commander

Hey, more reasons to space out on the boob tube! This one has no affiliation with Tivo, but it’s still a decent app for managing your Tivo set-up. Tivo Commander is a secondary remote option that can set and modify recording times, as well as manage playback options. The app has a remote control for browsing through the system, searching for TV episodes and movies, and has an on-screen keyboard that comes in handy for searches. Until Tivo decides to bring its iPhone app to Android (the company says it is), Tivo Commander is a good way to manage your watchlist.

Gifinator

Android 2.2+ required

The uptick in .gif images I’ve seen spread throughout the web since G+ debuted has been troubling. I’m about to add to that by telling readers about Gifinator, an app that creates animated gif ‘s by stringing together images from your cell phone camera. Users tap a screen repeated times to take pictures that are then grouped for the gif. They can then set frame speed, add effects like Sepia or black and white, or rotate the final image. Gifinator has a free lite version that only saves low-quality 160 x 120 images. Upgrade to Gifinator Plus ($0.99) to have the option to save 320×480 or 640 x 480 images.

Kona’s Crate

Android 2.0.1+ required

Kona’s Crate is a game about quick-thinking, reflexes, and puzzle-solving skills. It requires that the player tap a left or right side of the screen to navigate a hovercraft to deliver a crate to Chief Kona . Tapping too hard will tip the hovercraft in either direction and cause the crate to fall. Players are rewarded for delivering the crate with speed, but being overzealous ruins the process. The game is simple but challenging and can be very highly competitive thanks to leaderboards and achievement hunting through OpenFeint. Try the free lite version and get the full $0.99 version if you like it.

I recently had the privilege to check out SafeWallet, an app that helps to keep all your online passwords for different sites and services safe and secure in one place.  Check out my review after the break.
I was extremely lucky to be part of the BETA team, this gave me an inside view of the needs of end users.
To be honest with you I do not know how anyone can manage without SafeWallet. There is no safer way to store passwords. SafeWallet uses the most powerful AES 256bit encryption for your security.
There is no need to remember each and every password that you have created on websites, banks, etc. You just type it into SafeWallet via your Android phone/Windows. Once completed you have the ability to Sync your phone and Windows via Wireless or USB.
The windows version has the ability to generate passwords for you. To visit any website that you have created within SafeWallet, just click the password, it will then be copied to your clipboard for to you paste into the relevant field. Once you have copied the password just click on the website which will take you to relevant website.
SafeWallet will work on most Android devices including Smartphones and Tablets. SBSH are always working on SafeWallet to improve for the end user and Devices.
The cost of the Android app at the time of writing is $3.95. This is a small price to pay for peace of mind knowing that all your passwords, Bank Details and Driving License details are kept safe. There is an extra charge of $14.99 for the Windows version.
Overall SafeWallet has got to be one of the Apps that you pay for. I know there are a lot of other Wallets that you could use that are cheaper.
The user's UI is so easy to use even an 8 year old could. If you were to lose your wallet/purse you know that your Credit/Bank Cards will not be used.

Get the Optimus 2X Clock/Weather Widget on Your Phone

The folks over at GetAndroidStuff have managed to grab the Daily Briefing widget from the new LG Optimus 2X. This widget displays a clock, weather, news, and your day's schedule. LG has really found what the people like with this widget. When many users get an Android device, they look for a nice clock & weather widget to display on their homescreen, and this one is perfect. The best part about this easy mod is that it does not require root or any (serious) knowledge of the Android platform.

Dropbox Installs Android Apps on the Go

Looking for a quick and easy way to install a few APK files but don't have a USB cable handy? Here's a tip from a Lifehacker user: Put the files in your Dropbox account and you're already halfway done. Open up the Dropbox app on your phone and click on the file.


 The rest is magic as the installer takes it from there. In an added bonus, you can share files with other Android users!  Don't forget you'll need to have your phone set up to permit non-Market sources to install apps.
